Parliamentary question on indoor air quality references IAQM’s new Guidance

Geraint Davies MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Air Pollution, highlighted the importance of indoor air quality in a recent Parliamentary question and asked the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care whether their department is taking steps to improve standards on indoor air quality for regulators and local authorities and whether their department is receiving professional guidance, including from the IAQM, on improving those standards.

This question follows the publication of the IAQM’s new Indoor Air Quality Guidance: Assessment, Monitoring, Modelling and Mitigation.

The IAQM were pleased to note that the response from the Department of Health and Social Care referred to the upcoming development of a new standard on indoor air quality by Public Health England, in collaboration with NICE. The IAQM welcomes the opportunity to feed into this new standard during the consultation phase.

Christine McHugh, Chair of the IAQM, said:
“The IAQM is very grateful to Geraint Davies MP for raising this pressing issue at the highest level. The pandemic, during which time we spent even more hours per day in our homes, has made everyone more aware of the importance of good indoor air quality, but this is much broader than coronavirus. A new standard cannot come too soon and we are ready to help Public Health England and NICE urgently address this.”
