Rosie is an air quality consultant with Arup – she carries out air quality and odour assessments for a wide range of clients and has been undertaking research using the ADMS model to investigate the relationship between odour standards used by modellers and the likely real world experience of the public.

Michael is the Director of Arup’s Environmental business and a past Vice Chair and Committee member of IAQM. He was the chair of the working group that produced the IAQM Guidance on Odours and Planning in 2014 and the update in 2018. He has been involved in air quality and odour assessment for over 35 years, has published on the topic and is a contributing author to the book Designing with Smells published by Routledge in 2017.

Sarah Horrocks, Atkins

A practical example of using AERMOD to analyse exceedances of a threshold

Sarah, BSc, MSc, CEnv, CSci, is an Associate Consultant and the Air Quality team leader at Atkins. She is responsible for managing and delivering the technical input to design, planning and permitting stages spanning the water, transportation and energy markets, both in the UK and overseas. Sarah joined Atkins in 2000 having completed a degree in Chemistry and a Masters in Environmental Technology. She started her career undertaking health risk assessments and from there, specialised in detailed air dispersion modelling. She has presented evidence at the A21 dualling public inquiry and more recently at DCO planning hearings for an energy centre and port expansion. Sarah was heavily involved in the drafting of the 2019 IAQM guide to the assessment of air quality impacts on designated sites.

Huw Woodward, Imperial College London

Simulating the dispersion of traffic emissions at the microscale

Huw is a Research Associate at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. His research focuses on pollution dispersion modelling. This includes both work for DEFRA using the UK Integrated Assessment Model (UKIAM) to estimate future projections of UK air quality and ecosystem health, and also research as a member of the MAGIC project. The MAGIC project is a collaboration between Imperial College, Cambridge University and the University of Surrey, with the aim of improving our understanding of the connection between indoor and outdoor air quality. Huw’s focus within the project is on microscale dispersion modelling, using computational fluid dynamics to investigate the effect of features such as traffic induced turbulence, trees and roof geometry on the dispersion of pollutants within urban areas.

Jenny Stocker, CERC

Understanding the source contribution from elevated roads

Jenny received her PhD from University of Manchester in Applied Mathematics and has worked at Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC) since 2000, where she is now a principal consultant. Jenny manages CERC’s contribution to a range of UK and international research projects in which CERC’s ADMS model is applied; these projects often lead to model developments such as the advanced street canyon model in ADMS-Urban and the system that couples ADMS to regional–scale chemical transport models. Jenny has extensive practical experience of running the ADMS models in addition to expertise in emissions inventory development and has led the development of CERC’s urban heat island model. Jenny has presented at many conferences and has published scientific papers in leading journals.

David Bagshaw, Atkins

Roadside barriers – Accounting for the effect of vehicle induced momentum and turbulence in the prediction of roadside concentrations

David is a senior engineer within the fluid mechanics team at Atkins, with 17 years’ experience in the prediction of fluid flow. For Atkins he is involved in computational modelling of fluid flow, heat transfer and hazard assessment for a variety of industries. David was technicalead for the 2019 study into roadside air quality barrier effectiveness for Highways England.

Claire Holman, Brook Cottage Consultants

Shair: A real time air quality model

Claire has worked on air quality management for 40 years since she was awarded her air quality PhD in 1980. Currently she is a director of Brook Cottage Consultants which she established in 2013. Previously she worked for Peter Brett Associates (Stantec), ENVIRON (Ramboll) and several universities. Claire has extensive experience of emission inventories, emission control, monitoring, dispersion modelling, cost benefit/effectiveness analyses and policy development. She has advised governments in Europe, Asia and Africa, and the European Commission on strategic air quality issues. Her dispersion modelling experience includes the modelling of a 50 x 20 km domain centred on Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and the modelling of 10 major European cities for a European Commission project.  She has been an active member of the IAQM Committee for many years. Until last November she was the IAQM Chair for four years and before that the Vice-Chair for three years.

Glyn Rhys-Tyler, Consultant and Researcher

Light vehicle dynamics and NOx emissions on the motorway network

Glyn, is an independent consultant and researcher specialising in the field of highway transportation and environmental policy. He has three decades of professional experience in transportation planning, transport modelling, traffic engineering, research, and environmental assessment, having worked both in the private consultancy sector at the Transport Research Laboratory, and in academia at Newcastle University. He gained his PhD at Newcastle University, researching the exhaust emissions characteristics of road vehicles.

In recent years he has worked as an independent consultant, delivering research projects and providing technical advice and guidance on road transport and environmental policy to organisations including the European Commission (Research Executive Agency), Highways England, DfT, and the Connected Places Catapult. He has recently been supporting Highways England in the development of DMRB LA 105 Air Quality.

Jack Davison, University of York

Uses of vehicle emissions remote sensing data for emission factor development

Jack, is a second-year PhD student at the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories in the University of York, supervised by Dr David Carslaw. He obtained a Master of Chemistry degree in 2018 with a study on the validation of low-cost sensors for measuring ambient carbon dioxide and methane. On progressing to postgraduate study, his research refocused on drawing out new understanding from vehicle emission remote sensing measurements on the effects of road transport on air quality. This has included modeling fuel consumption from kerbside data to generate distance-based emission factors and, more recently, investigating the potential for remote sensing to inform on the factors influencing non-exhaust particulate matter emissions.

Paul Agnew, Met Office

The role of snow in a significant UK dispersion event 

Paul began his career in science working for the UK Atomic Energy Authority, studying radiation effects in crystalline materials. He spent 3 years working on an international project in the USA studying space nuclear thermionic power. Following a two-year detour as a secondary school science teacher, he joined the Met Office in 2000 to work on aviation meteorology. Since 2005 he has worked on modelling atmospheric dispersion of pollution and air quality, in both Lagrangian and Eulerian frameworks. His interests include composition forecast verification, quantifying the health impacts of pollution and statistical forecast modelling. He is currently the manager of the Air Quality Modelling team at the Met Office and responsible for the operational forecasting of air quality.
