IAQM Webinar: Air quality in the rail sector

16 Feb, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm

Join us for the next IAQM webinar exploring the impact of train travel on air quality.

This webinar will cover how the RSSB and Network Rail are leading the rail industry’s efforts to understand and improve air quality. Overall rail emissions may be relatively minor, but these may be significant at a local level.

As road emissions reduce, driven by regulation, policy and technological advances, the rail industry is being pro-active to ensure air quality on the rail network is understood and managed appropriately. The rail industry, through RSSB, established the Air Quality Steering Group to develop a collaborative and consistent approach to understanding and mitigating air quality risks. The resulting Air Quality Strategic Framework, published in June 2020, is based on a robust, risk-based approach to reducing air quality impacts. The framework details a series of recommendations based around three key themes:

  • Modelling: improving our ability to understand risks at a local level;
  • Mitigating: ensuring appropriate and effective measures are taken to reduce emissions;
  • Monitoring: establishing a programme to measure emissions and ensure improvements.

Our speakers

James Wright, is Lead Air Quality Specialist at RSSB with emissions and air quality experience from the automotive, marine and rail sectors.

Philbert Chan is the Air Quality Specialist at RSSB. He previously worked in various consultancies focusing on air quality assessments for developments, industrial processes and infrastructure projects (highways and ports). He has carried out dispersion modelling for rail, as well as monitoring in train stations.

Azhar Quaiyoom is a Chartered Engineer and Environment Specialist, working for Network Rail creating Air Quality action plans and implementing enhancements to ventilation systems at New Street station as well as supporting the creation of a new Air Quality standard in Network Rail.
