Delivering real improvements in local air quality.

In line with the IAQM guidance as air quality professionals, we quantify impacts (negligible, slight, moderate or substantial at individual receptors) and based on our professional judgement, conclude whether effects on local air quality are likely to be significant. 

The assessment of impacts considers the effectiveness of mitigation measures that are incorporated into the development proposals, but in terms of reducing residual impacts, we often don’t go far enough. 

We are frequently steered by local authorities towards calculating damage costs, however, rarely are these calculations translated into practical measures to prevent or overcome the possible effects.

Increasingly, we rely on unsubstantiated statements about the likely air quality benefits of green travel measures and electric vehicle charging points.

These issues were made clear in Gladman Developments Limited v SSCLG (November 2017). What have we really learned, and how can we demonstrate the measures we propose in our assessments will deliver sufficient improvements in local air quality to avoid significant effects on human health and ecosystems?
