SUMMARY:Air quality and its ecological impacts: the case of nitrogen deposition
DESCRIPTION:Humans have had a vast impact on the nitrogen cycle\, releasing large amounts of nitrogen into the environment. Nitrogen pollution comes from a range of sources\, including fossil fuel combustion and agriculture\, and it is deposited on the Earth’s surface in the form of wet and dry deposition. All this excess nitrogen has had large impacts on our semi-natural plant communities and the soil that they grow in. Nitrogen deposition enriches and acidifies soils. This has impacts on the plant community\, reducing the number of plants and changing the species composition\, especially in habitats where organisms are adapted to low-nutrient conditions. In turn\, the changes to the plant community mean that we can see impacts further up the food chain. This presentation will provide an overview of atmospheric nitrogen deposition and its impacts on semi-natural plant communities. This webinar is free and open to all. Our speakerProfessor Carly Stevens is Professor of Plant Ecology and Soil Biogeochemistry at Lancaster University. Her research is on the impacts of global change on plant communities\, soil ecology\, soil biogeochemistry and plant-soil interactions. In particular\, her research has focused on the impacts of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on semi-natural ecosystems over the last 25 years. She has authored or co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications. She teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervises research students. SUMMARY:IAQM early careers networking: Bristol\, Leeds and London
DESCRIPTION:The IAQM Early Careers Network (ECN) Subcommittee are excited to host 3 simultaneous networking events in Bristol\, Leeds\, and London on the 24th September from 5pm.  \nThe events are free and exclusively open to members of the IAQM ECN*. They will be taking place in-person\, with no hybrid/remote options available.  \nAll three events will be hosted by a member of the IAQM ECN Subcommittee (details below). There will be plenty of time for informal discussion amongst attendees\, as well as the chance to hear directly from the Subcommittee regarding activities and opportunties for involvement within the ECN. \nNetworking is a valuable opportunity to connect to other professionals\, gain industry insights\, and exchange knowledge with peers. These events are also a chance to meet fellow ECN members ahead of future in-person events such as the IAQM’s upcoming annual conference\, Routes to Clean Air. As an IAQM ECN member\, you have the unique ability to meet like-minded colleagues right across the air quality sector and expand your professional network. \nPlease ensure you are logged in via the IES members’ portal before registering at the below link. You will be able to select whether you would like to join us in Bristol\, Leeds or London. Once your attendance is confirmed\, you will be contacted by a member of the IES staff team with further details specific to the city you have chosen. If you have any questions\, please get in touch with Amy at communities@the-ies.org. \n \nOur hosts\nMark Nichols is an Associate Air Quality Consultant at Rappor. He has a background in Environmental Management\, with a BSc and MSc in this field. He has been a member of the IAQM since 2018\, and has been on the IAQM ECN since 2020. He is Vice Chair of the ECN and is a member of the IAQM Committee. Mark will be hosting the Bristol event.  \nJekabs Jursins is an Air Quality Senior Consultant at WSP\, coming from a background in Geophysical Sciences at the University of Leeds. His main area of expertise lies in the policy review of National Air Pollution Control Programmes submitted by EU Member States under the National Emission reduction Commitment Directive (Directive (EU) 2016/2284) for the benefit of the European Commission. He also provides air quality modelling and assessment support in Local Air Quality Management processes. Jekabs will be hosting the Leeds event.  \nKit Benjamin is a Senior Air Quality Consultant at Buro Happold. In this role he works on a range of projects both in the UK and internationally\, including for development planning and EIA\, indoor air quality\, international concept masterplans and strategic redevelopment plans. His background is in meteorology\, for which he has an integrated masters degree. Prior to joining the air quality industry\, he worked as a research technician in the field of urban micrometeorology. He has been an associate member of the IAQM since 2021. DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Air Quality Management presents Routes to Clean Air (RTCA) 2026\, its annual conference on topics relevant to air quality practitioners and associated professionals.
